The CARE Foundation hosted its Spring 2011 Alternative Energy Workshop, presented by Southern California Edison at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), on Saturday, May 14. Over 100 students, teachers, business leaders, community members and friends attended this exclusive event and got an inside look at the exciting SONGS facility during a day to remember filled with fun and food.
This workshop involved speakers on alternative energy and power issues with a focus on near term solutions. As part of its Technology Initiative, the CARE Foundation hopes to inspire students to learn more about science and technology through various events focused on these industries. The event was also sponsored by the University of California, Irvine; Internet Marketing Association; Patriots Federal Credit Union; and Sundried Tomato, whose contributions allowed students to attend for free and travel via bus to the event.
The event featured multiple breakout sessions: Speakers Dan Cleavenger and Chris Abel from Southern California Edison discussed nuclear energy; Nicholas Voelpel, also from Southern California Edison, spoke on electric vehicles; and Dr. Tim Brown, from UC Irvine's Advanced Power and Energy Program, spoke on the future of energy. Guests also toured the SONGS mechanical laboratory where they received hands-on demonstrations of the mechanical equipment used at SONGS, as well as an in-depth radiation shielding demonstration
The 17th Annual CARE Foundation Golf Classic
Our 17th Annual Golf Classic was held, once again, at the El Niguel Country Club on Monday, November 8th. Nearly eighty golfers participated in this year’s tournament on a beautiful, sunny day. Golfers arrived at the country club where tables full of raffle prizes were displayed. While golfing, participants enjoyed complimentary food and beverages throughout the course from Savannah Chop House / Laguna Niguel, Brio Tuscany Grill/ Monarch Beach, Ruby's Diner / San Juan Capistrano, Sundried Tomatoe Cafe / San Juan Cpaistrano and Donna B’s Bakery / Laguna Niguel. A buffet dinner in the club house followed golf, with the always-entertaining Curt Visca serving as emcee and auctioneer for the live and silent auctions, which included items from The Resort at Pelican Hill, a ride on the Goodyear Blimp, and a catered Newport Beach Harbor Cruise. Net proceeds of the event totaled over $18,000 and will benefit students throughout CUSD. To view photos by click the following: GOLF 2010 photos.
